But, although this island adapts to everyone's holiday, the truth is that there are some points in Mallorca that one cannot miss during their stay.
Drach Caves: an essential visit in Mallorca
In this case we refer to the Drach Caves, located in the municipality of Porto Cristo, in the eastern coastal area of the island, and which have become one of the main natural tourist attractions.
These caves, about 1,200 metres long and up to 25 meters deep in some places, hide a huge underground lake, Lake Martel, which today is considered one of the largest underground lakes in the world.
All about the Drach Caves
To visit these caves it is necessary to purchase a ticket, which can be purchased both online or at the box office. Right at the entrance there is a large free parking available for both cars and motorcycles, bicycles and buses.
It is important to note that all visits include a live classical music concert, as well as the possibility of crossing the lake by boat or on foot. Visiting hours during the high season, from March to October, are from 10 am to 5 pm.
In the same way, it should be noted that the visits are not guided, although they are done in large groups to organize the schedules. All visits last approximately one hour, including the 10-minute concert.
Because the temperature inside the caves always ranges between 17 and 20 degrees, warm clothing is not necessary.
Discovery of the Caves of Drach
Although there is no specific date, it is estimated that around the year 1338 these caves were mentioned for the first time in a written notice from Roger de Rovenach, governor of Mallorca, to the mayor of Manacor.
In the year 1632, the word "Drach" appeared for the first time in the book Historia del Reino de Mallorca by Dameto, and between 1784 and 1836 the caves were already mentioned by many of the historians and geographers who studied the island: Cardelan Despuig , Bernard and Solà or Joaquín María Bover.
